Well, this is a nice surprise — Crunchyroll announcing earlier on today that the 2-part film Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction is getting an anime series.
An anime series comprised from two films with an interesting post apocalyptic, sci-fi premise and, such a pretty art style, they seemed intriguing from the minute they were announced.
Not only that, the anime series is actually premiering on May 23rd on the streaming platform. Holy cow! Only three days to wait.
What that means is all of the content of the two Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction films, plus extra footage exclusive to the upcoming anime series, will be released in 18 episodes on Crunchyroll beginning on May 23rd at 8:00 p.m. PT with Episode 1.
The first episode of the anime will kick off on Crunchyroll around the same time Part 2 of the film premieres in Japanese movie theaters on May 24th.
The regions getting the 18-episode anime series are — North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
So, pretty much most of the world.
The rest of the Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction anime series will be released one episode per week.
I guess that then answers the question I have had for a few weeks now about when the Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction films will premiere in the west.
They probably won’t.
The plot of Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction
The Dead Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction film, and now the anime series, is based on the 12-volume manga series by Inio Asano.
Viz Media publishes all 12 volumes in English.
As for the plot of the anime series, Crunchyroll talks about it like this:
As the world is threatened by the sudden appearance of a mysterious alien mothership, best friends Koyama Kadode and Nakagawa “Ontan” Oran carry on about their high school life.
But as they grow up, they face existential questions, learning adulthood’s complexities and that the true threat may not be from above.
The anime is directed by Tomoyuki Kurokawa (Bokura no Yoake), with screenplay by Reiko Yoshida (original creator of Tokyo Mew Mew New), and character designs and chief animation direction by Nobutaka Itou (The Tatami Time Machine Blues).

The trailer also features the anime’s opening theme song — ‘Zett-Zett-Zett-Zett- Zettai Seiiki’ (Abababab Absolute Sanctuary) by ano feat Lilas Ikuta (aka YOASOBI’s lead singer Ikura).
Ano is also voicing protagonist Ouran “Ontan” Nakagawa, while Lilas Ikuta is voicing the second protagonist, her friend Kadode Koyama.
